Annie Pang, Testimonial

As a former student who has attended her class from 5th grade to 8th grade and now as an incoming Architecture student at Cornell, I am confident to say that her teaching has greatly impacted me and made me the artist I am today.

Ms. Lee has the amazing ability to understand and accommodate the needs of middle school students. She’s able to push and drive students to excel to their fullest potential, which I personally appreciated. I vividly remember feeling exhausted but inspired, since it was such an intellectually rigorous experience. My skills in discipline and self-efficacy were developed, and this has helped me when I led the creation of a mural in high school.

She utilizes an experimental approach and intensive approach for students to work on projects. She allows the student to explore for themselves, while guiding along the way. I have learned to dig deep into each piece. How would each part interact with each to form the whole? How does the difference between the values of light create contrast or focus? She uses a Socratic way of teaching, asking the student how specific choices affect the outcome of the piece, pushing me to think critically and creatively for myself. She doesn’t simply give out instruction, but rather, she supports the student to explore for themselves.

Group and peer critiques, in addition to individual ones, are essential to her class. She naturally forms an environment where questions and discussion are encouraged, and the bouncing of ideas have opened my eyes, and created a foundation, to my own artistic expression.

As a Malaysian Chinese student who moved to America when I was four, I clearly felt a sense of acceptance in her class. She always exhibited care and acceptance of me and other students, regardless of background. Ms. Lee was and is a passionate and deeply caring teacher to me. She did not only teach me the fundamental skills to execute artwork, but also taught me the criticality and discourse that was essential to my own artistic vision.
